The annual mix of traditional courtyard carols and seasonal music in the Church, with festive looks! The lovely people at St Michael and All Angels in Barnes kept us supplied with mulled wine and mince pies, huge thanks to them.


Fri 5th Dec 2025 – Barnes Xmas Fair – Coach & Horses – 6-7pm

A wonderful new venue, with thanks to the Coach & Horses in Barnes. We felt so welcome, with an enthusiastic audience, as we played carols and seasonal favourites.


Sunday 9th Nov 2025 – Remembrance – St Mary’s Barnes

We returned to St Mary’s, in Barnes, to perform The Last Post (soloist Simon Slack) and accompany hymns: “O God Our Help In Ages Past”, “Immortal, Invisible”, and “Thine Be The Glory”. The National Anthem was followed by “Songs That Won The War”.


Sat 25th Oct 2025 – 50th Anniversary Concert – Wathen Hall

The highlight of our 50th year – a very special concert to celebrate. We welcomed former Music Director, David Smith, to join Daryle and the Band, alongside the wonderful Barnes Community Choir . A large, enthusiastic, audience helped us to raise the roof, and we sold every raffle ticket! Andrew Summers, (Chair of the Barnes Music Festival) opened and closed the concert. We welcomed past and present players – plus their (over-18) musical friends at the Band’s standard of sight-reading and playing – to a special event to mark our 50th Anniversary.  Our MD Daryle Lowden, and guest conductor Ian Harby led the day.  We played Aurora Borealis by Rossano Galante, Viva Musica! – Alfred Reed, French Impressions – Guy Woolfenden and Colonial Song by Percy Grainger.   It was a wonderful day at Wathen Hall, St Paul’s, rounded off by a trip to the pub!

It was the start of The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!  We had a fabulous time playing outside Rose House in Barnes High Street, for the Barnes Community Association’s Christmas Evening. We played traditional carols and seasonal music, and Storm Darragh kindly held off (mostly).  We enjoyed the added excitement of being filmed for a Band Project in 2025!

The Band were at the Memorial outside to mark the Silence and play the Last Post (Trumpet – Simon Slack).  As the congregation entered the Church, the Band played A Quiet Moment (Philip Sparke).  The hymns were Immortal Invisible, O God Our Help In Ages Past, and Thine Be The Glory.  The outgoing voluntary was Songs That Won The Wars (arr. Roger Tomlinson).

The Band welcomed 6th-form A-Level students to join in our rehearsal.  They brought violin, keyboard, sax and bass guitar – we had a wonderful evening!  Annabel gave a lovely performance of Massenet’s “Meditation”, arranged for wind ensemble. The Band is committed to supporting music education whenever we have the opportunity.

The Band were privileged to spend a full-day working with renowned Conductor, Composer and Arranger, Rob Wiffin.   We played Exultate (S.Hazo), High Spirits (R.Wiffin), Dusk (S.Bryant) and Spirit of Andalusia (P. Sparke).  Rob was so encouraging and expected a lot of us!  We enjoyed well-earned cake and prosecco afterwards.  Huge thanks to St Michael’s for letting us use their beautiful Church, and to Daryle for organising this fab event.

Oh we loved this!  Glorious Summer day, under a new tree next to the FiSH building by Barnes Pond.  The FiSH and Child Lit Fest folks made us sooo welcome, the delicious food and drinks were hugely appreciated.  So many children and families joined in the fun, great to be recruiting our Band Members of the future.  Flex Programme:  There’s No Business Like Showbusiness, Summer Holiday, My Favourite Things, Pink Panther, California Dreamin’, When You Wish Upon A Star, New York New York.  Then the fabulous Steph and Clive with their accordian/percussion French cafe groove (we shut our eyes and were transported to Paris!) plus Susie, Kevin and Lou with a brilliant, witty bassoon trio.  After which, the Flex Band played:  Quizas, Quizas, Quizas, Scarborough Fair,  Disney Film Favourites, Music To Watch Girls By, Dream A Little Dream, Hallelujah, I’m A Believer, Beyond The Sea, King Of The Road.

The Band returned to Central London to take part in this annual festival, at the iconic bandstand, as the nation mourned the loss of Queen Elizabeth II.  We played “Solemn Melody” to acknowledge the sombre mood, then our planned programme:  “Folk Song Suite” (Vaughan Williams), “Selections from Hairspray”, “Singin’ In The Rain”, “Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown”, “Slavonic Dance IV” (Dvorak), “Highlights from ‘Yesterday'”, “There’s No Business Like Show Business”, “Plymouth Hoe”, “The Shepherd’s Song” (solo Steph Scrivener), “Gee Office Krupke”, “Champions”, “Soul Bossanova”, “Three Klezmer Dances”, then, poignantly, we finished with our first performance of the National Anthem as “God Save The King”.

Members of the Band love this gig under our tree by Gail’s bakery and entertaining the good folk – especially the children – of Barnes.  We played FlexBand favourites, with an accordion/percussion interlude from Steph and Clive, then they were joined by oboe (Catriona) and bassoon (Susie) for folksongs to close the gig.  Bravo all!

After the most extraordinary pandemic year of Covid-19, and in between lockdown and Tier 4, the Band carefully played socially-distanced carols at the Barnes Village Christmas evening, and at St. Michael’s Church.  Very special.
